Liner Notes
"Welcome to Hollywood" is the second release from wordsmith rockers, Mary Carves the Chicken. Rule number one for power trios is, quite simply: "play big." You will find that MCTC meets and exceeds the rule here. This record was recorded live, capturing the essence of the Chickens as a live power trio phenomenon.
The band pulled out all the stops both lyrically and musically. The guitar solos range from epic to melodically beautiful, to blistering shredfests. As one record exec aptly referred to guitarist, Bob Sherden, "Man, that dude just keeps on givin' it up!" The drums are ultra tight and energetic; and as always, Page Jackson delivers lyrically, belting out social commentary on issues ranging from yuppie-ism to religion, to seeking more from life than just consumerism. And as you simply must expect from MCTC, the record is eclectic, running the gamut from plaintive storytelling to absolute headbanging. Having gotten a recording deal a year before, and having felt, but resisted, the pressure to alter their vision, the band delivers the cynical and introspective, "Welcome to Hollywood," and the equally cynical "Simi Valley." There is no concern for the radio-friendly length of a tune, or the music industry's ever nagging need to pigeon-hole a band to make them more "identifiable." The Chickens write them as they feel them; and play them all as they play them live: all-out.
Mary Carves the Chicken is:
